Moving toward a “paperless” environment requires forensic labs to develop a strategic workflow for image acquisition and download, documentation, comparative analysis, and integration of evidence images into a LIMS infrastructure. The LIMS Connect software is the ideal solution for bringing this together for all of the departments within a full service forensic lab. LIMS Connect simplifies this process.

LIMS Connect reads case information (case number, evidence ID, etc.) from your LIMS and builds a folder context structure based on that information. This provides a temporary holding facility for all of the case related images. This context provides an organized structure so that all of the image information has a logical order and can be stored on an client computer or on a central server. Users no longer have to worry about what file folder they put their images into and LIMS administrators no longer have to worry about where the image information is located prior to it reaching the LIMS.

 

Documentation and Comparative Analysis Tools

 

Users are able to take advantage of all of the tools for annotation/documentation, enhancement, and comparative analysis. These tools provide the forensic analyst/examiner with the ability to create a “visual digital record” that is prepared to be submitted to the LIMS. By using the temporary storage facility users can create a “work in process” mode where they can make as many changes and updates as needed up to the point that they commit to submitting the image(s) to the LIMS. At the point where they have been submitted to the LIMS they become part of the official case record.

LIMS-Connect provides the complete functionality of a secure case image management system that can communicate directly with the LIMS. This provides all of the necessary tools required for maintaining a complete audit trail for all images, image versioning, and controlled accessibility for sensitive image information. Copies of all images can be submitted to the LIMS, but the original can be maintained in the LIMS Connect software in the database.
